Ex-libris J.M. “All these Parisian monsters, portrayed without mercy, etched in acid, depicted in the defiance of their vice by a master artist and writer, have appeared one by one in a daily newspaper, and many have been able to savour the exquisiteness of the style and the beautiful form of these diabolical tales which Mendès might have called *Les Damnés* or, following Montaigne’s example, *Les Verrues parisiennes*. This book is a museum of horrors, but a moralising one like Dupuytren’s, in which all the exhibits are presented to the public with the utmost tact. (Le Livre.)” in Gay III, 276.
