STRAPAROLE (Jean-François). *Les Facétieuses Nuits du seigneur J.-F. Straparole*, translated by J. Louveau and P. de Larivey. 14 illustrations by J. Garnier. Paris, Jouaust, 1882. 4 vols. in-12 Bradel, tobacco-coloured half-maroquin with corner pieces, title, volume number, fleur-de-lis and date gilded on the spine, gilded head, covers preserved (Bretault). A very fine copy of this collection of 74 unbridled, often highly unconventional short stories, many of which are inspired by ancient tales (The Thousand and One Nights, Morlini, etc.). The first part had been translated by Jean Louveau (1560) and the second by Pierre de Larivey (alias Pierre Giunta, of the family of famous printers of Italian origin) in 1572. These fantasies in turn inspired numerous authors of the 16th and 17th centuries: Shakespeare for *The Taming of the Shrew*, Perrault for some of his *Tales*, and Molière for *The School for Wives*.
