ANDERSEN (Hans Christian). *Nye Eventyr og historier* [New Tales and Stories, in Danish]. Fourth collection / Second edition [and] Second series. Second collection / Second edition. Copenhagen, C. A. Reitzels, 1861–1865. 2 vols. large 12mo (17.6 x 14 cm), (6)-82-(6) pp. and (8)-100 pp., green half-shagreen with corner pieces, ribbed spine, double gilt fillet on the covers (contemporary binding). Danish editions of two collections of Andersen’s fairy tales. These *New Tales and Stories*, published between 1858 and 1866, comprise two series, each consisting of four collections; and constitute Andersen’s final collection of fairy tales following *Tales Told for Children* (1835–1842) and *New Tales* (1844–1848). The first volume is the second edition – the first edition dates from 1860 – of the five tales that make up the fourth collection of the first series: ‘The Pen and Inkwell’, ‘The Child in the Grave’, ‘The Farmyard Cockerel and the Weathercock’, ‘“Charming!”’, and ‘A Tale of the Dunes’. The second volume is also the second edition – first published in 1862 – of the four tales that make up the second collection of the second series: *The Virgin of the Ice*, *The Butterfly*, *Psyche*, *The Snail and the Rosebush*. The various Danish editions of these collections are still rare.
