Description
CHARRON (Pierre). *On Wisdom*, three books by Pierre Charron, a Parisian, Doctor of Laws. Based on the true copy from Bourdeavx. Leiden, published by the Elzeviers, 1646.
In-12, (12) folios, 663–(8) pp., pale calfskin, plain spine with decoration, title label, gilt scroll framing the covers, marbled edges (early 19th-century binding)
First Elzevirian edition, featuring an engraved frontispiece title and one engraved plate (the coat of arms of Prince Maximilian of Burgundy, Abbot of Saint-Vaast d’Arras, Count of La Loeve, to whom the work is dedicated).
“Undoubtedly the finest” of the four Elzevir editions of this text. “The Elzevirs followed the text of the original Bordeaux edition, Millanges, 1601, in-8, although the author had subsequently introduced a considerable number of additions and corrections into his book. But as most of these revisions had been made with a view to avoiding censorship by the Sorbonne, it is not surprising that the Protestant publishers took no account of them, and that they stuck to the original version.” (Willems)
Split bands, narrow top margins, a few faint old water stains; otherwise a good copy of this work influenced by the ideas of Montaigne (Brunet, I, 1810; Graesse, II, 123; Tchemerzine, III, 262; Willems, II, p. 147, no. 601).
