CLARÉTIE (Arsène-Armand, known as Jules). *La cigarette*. Illustrations by Henri ZO. Paris, printed for A. Girard, 1906. Small quarto, paperback, with an illustrated, embossed cover. “A sought-after booklet” according to Carteret, who specifies the print run—not indicated in the volume—as 110 copies on Marais vellum and 10 on antique Japanese paper, with a set of woodcuts. This is a copy on Marais vellum featuring a set of illustrations printed on China paper. (Carteret V, 49.) A few small foxing spots. Also included, by the same author: *La canne de M. Michelet*. Paris, Le Conquet, 1886. Small 8vo, brown half-shagreen with corner pieces, ribbed spine, gilt title, gilt head, covers preserved (bound by E. Dervois fils). 12 compositions by P. JAZET, etched. Printed in a run of 175 copies in the reissued format (30 on vellum with 3 states and 145 on vellum or Japanese paper with 2 states) and 825 in small 8vo format on vellum with one state of the illustrations (such as our copy, numbered 223). Ex-libris stamp ‘A.B.’ (Carteret V, 49.) Also included are 2 autograph letters signed by Clarétie with envelopes: - An unsigned autograph letter (Paris, 24 October 1864, according to the envelope), 1 p. in-12 on letterhead, addressed to Louis Leroy: “Here, my dear friend, is this important piece of news: a masked journalist – and one intoxicated by Djinns – composed, the other evening, on leaving the Opéra-Comique, a madrigal that will delight Mlle Marie Roze [...]” - Autograph letter, Paris, 14 January 1880, 1 p. in-12 on letterhead, to the same: “My dear friend, What a lovely surprise and what a beautiful landscape! I am absolutely delighted and very grateful to you [...] I had only hoped for a watercolour. You do things in grand style [...] It consoles me a little for Solignac.”
