DIDEROT (Denis). *Le Neveu de Rameau*, a dialogue. A posthumous and previously unpublished work. Paris, Delaunay, 1821. In-8, paperback, temporary cover, title label on the spine. [2] ff. (bookseller’s catalogue), [1] f. half-title, 1 frontispiece (portrait of the protagonist), [1] f. title page, 262 pp. First French edition, dated. The German bookseller Goeschen published a German edition in 1805 in Leipzig, based on Goethe’s translation, in-12 with notes. It was this German translation that was retranslated into French by Messrs de Saur and de Saint-Geniès, and published in 1821 as ‘Ouvrage Posthume et Inédit’." This is to be distinguished from the edition considered to be the true first edition, published by Brière in 1821 [1823] and forming Volume XXI of the Œuvres de Diderot (the latter having been compiled, for its part, from a French manuscript copy originating from the Vandeuls, the heirs of Diderot’s daughter).
