A historical novel set in Naples between 1798 and 1800, recounting the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples by the French revolutionary armies under the command of General Championnet. One of Alexandre Dumas’s major works, “a monument to the glory of Neapolitan patriotism, and to the shame of Bourbon tyranny”, in the author’s own words. This was Dumas’s last great novel; he had a score to settle with the Kingdom of Naples (the Bourbons), who had imprisoned his father for two years (1799–1801).
