Description
EXPILLY (Claude). The Poems of Sir Claude Expilly, Councillor to the King [sic] in his Council of State & President of the Parliament of Grenoble. Grenoble, Pierre Verdier, 1624.
Quarto, [4] folios, [459] pp. incorrectly paginated as 461 (pagination jumps from 297 to 300), [5] pp., mottled brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Restoration to the head and foot caps, edges and corners; traces of damp at the corners of the folios.
Second edition of the collected poems of Expilly (the first having been published in 1596 by Abel L’Angelier).
A fine example of a humanist magistrate, Claude Expilly (1561–1636) ended his career as Attorney General of the Parliament of Grenoble, then as President of that same Parliament in April 1616, after having rallied to Lesdiguières and Henry IV during the civil wars. (Cioranescu, XVII, 28 627.)
A fine copy belonging to the Dauphiné historian and genealogist Guy Allard (1635–1716), who wrote on the front endpapers: “Mr Du Prayet, Councillor of Parliament, who married Mr Expilly’s granddaughter, gave me this book on 5 May 1669”; and repeated this mark of ownership on the title page.
