FEYDEAU (Ernest). Memoirs of a Young Lady of Good Family, written by herself. Revised, corrected, abridged, toned down and rendered into proper French by Ernest Feydeau. London, Société des bibliophiles, n.d. [1877]. In-8, red half-shagreen with corner pieces, ribbed spine, gilt title, covers preserved (damaged) (later binding). A rare first edition of this libertine novel, written by Ernest Feydeau (1821–1873), an archaeologist and writer, father of Georges, which caused a scandal upon its first publication in 1877 and was reissued in Brussels in 1878 under the title *Souvenirs d’une cocodette*. A copy printed on large-format Dutch laid paper, comprising, following the frontispiece by Hanriot and the title page addressed to the Société des bibliophiles (undated), the title and text of the edition attributed to A.R. Williams in London in 1877. (Vicaire III, 700; Dutel, A-696; Pia 839–840; Gay III, 152, regarding the 1880 edition by Meuleneere: “These risqué memoirs contain bold language and very daring liberties which prevented them from being printed and introduced into France.
