HUGO (Victor). Works. Paris, Furne et Cie, 1840–1841. 12 tomes in 13 volumes, in-8, aubergine half-chagrin, decorated ribbed spine, gilt title and volume numbers, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Covers of the first volume sun-faded, a few rare foxing spots, otherwise a fine set. This edition was originally intended to comprise only 12 volumes: volume IX bis, containing *Ruy* and the three volumes of *Le Rhin* (three volumes missing here), was subsequently added. Complete with all 34 engraved illustrations, including the author’s portrait on the frontispiece. (Talvart & Place IX, 60–61.) Ex-libris J.M.
