Description
KARR (Alphonse). *Les Guêpes*. New edition. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1859. 6 series in 3 volumes, in-12, in burgundy half-shagreen, ribbed spine, author’s name, title and volume number gilded, double gilded fillet (contemporary binding). A few foxing spots. Includes a handwritten letter from the writer Léon Gozlan, addressed to Alphonse Karr, 1 p. in-12, in which he explains why their names do not appear in the Charter: “Nestor [Roqueplan] was afraid of offending Messrs de Wailly, of whom you are, he says, the enemy [...]”. Henri Coulon’s bookplate. J.M.’s bookplate. A writer who was at times scathing and at times moralistic, a satirical journalist with his magazine *Les Guêpes* (1839–1849), and a keen botanist, Karr (1808–1890) had taken up floriculture in Nice, where he had settled following the accession of Napoleon III; indeed, he was responsible for the first ‘battle of flowers’ at the Carnival.
