In-12, comprising (1) folio – 366 pp., half-vellum, richly decorated ribbed spine, title label, marbled edges (mid-19th-century binding).
First edition. Preceding the Letters is Book XXXIII of Livy, with a dedication to the Duke of Luynes. Two blank folios have been inserted before the Letters.
Small marginal ink stains on the first and last folios; a tear with no loss on p. 7; handwritten annotations on a blank page on the verso of p. 115. Rare. (Tchemerzine, VII, 539)
The Correspondence of Malherbe (c. 1555–1628) is of great interest, as it provides a chronicle of Parisian life and court life at the end of the reign of Henry IV and the beginning of that of Louis XIII. In it, Malherbe also reveals himself to be both critical and moralistic.
