Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. A collection of selected poems and prose pieces, taken from the four volumes of the *Oeuvres meslées* by Mr de F. d. S. R., without the frontispieces by His Most Serene Highness the Prince of Condé. Undated, undated (c. 1760). In-4, [243] folios, filled with medium-sized, calligraphic handwriting, very legible (approximately 20 lines per page), with stencilled borders and ornamentation, temporary binding of pink paper, smooth spine, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Spine faded, joints split. A curious handwritten collection of gallant poetry, presented as a collection of unpublished works by a mysterious ‘F. de S.-R.’, a member of the Prince of Condé’s Guards and a correspondent of Voltaire and President de Brosses. Composed between 1756 and 1761, these verses, accompanied by a scholarly introduction and critical notes, celebrate under various names the same woman whose infidelity is said to have driven the author to attempt suicide, offering a characteristic example of mid-18th-century love poetry. (Details on request.) Enclosed: [15] loose folios, containing similar pieces, written in one of the two handwritings found in the main text.
