Description
MONTAIGNE (Michel de). Journal of Michel de Montaigne’s Journey through Italy, Switzerland and Germany, in 1580 and 1581. With notes by M. de Querlon. Rome and Paris, Le Jay, 1774.
Quarto, speckled brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, marbled edges (contemporary binding).
First quarto edition, published almost simultaneously with the rare original duodecimo edition. It is adorned with a portrait engraved by Saint-Aubin on the frontispiece.
This previously unpublished account was discovered in 1769 by Abbé Prunis amongst Montaigne’s papers. For nearly a year and a half, he travelled across Europe on horseback, accompanied by his valet, in search of thermal springs to treat his kidney problems, with Rome as his ultimate destination. We follow him over the Alpine passes, as a pilgrim to Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, and as a spa guest at the baths of Baden or Lucca. This private diary, not intended for publication, is an excellent complement to the Essays. (Tchemerzine VIII, 446.)
A few scuffs, but otherwise a fine copy.
