VOISENON (Claude-Henri de Fusée de). *La Plaisanterie de campagne* – A one-act comedy in free verse. [Manuscript]. , [c. 1756]. In-4 manuscript (228 x 193 mm) comprising (14) autograph folios, 34 lines per page, mounted on tabs; blue half-maroquin with corner caps, spine with four raised bands, title gilded lengthwise, bookmark, gilded edges (19th-century binding) Autograph manuscript by Claude-Henri de Fusée de Voisenon of *La Plaisanterie de campagne*, a comedy premiered under this title at the Théâtre Italien in June 1756 but attributed to Favart – later set to music by Philidor and performed in 1769 under its definitive title *L’Amant déguisé ou le Jardinier supposé*. This is likely a final draft prior to the play’s premiere in 1756, in which around ten lines have still been crossed out and corrected – notably, the character Frontin le Jardinier, who would become Mathurin in subsequent versions. Abbé Claude-Henri de Fusée de Voisenon (1708–1775), nicknamed ‘Greluchon’ by Voltaire due to his frail health, wrote mainly comedies in verse, an opera performed in 1760, poems on biblical themes, novels and short stories, the libertine tone of which was surprising for a priest. He nevertheless succeeded in being elected to the Académie française on 4 December 1762, succeeding Crébillon the Elder. Thanks to Choiseul, he was a protégé of Madame de Pompadour and in 1771 became the plenipotentiary minister to the Prince-Bishop of Speyer. A remarkable manuscript of interest to the literary and dramatic history of the 18th century. Slight scuffing on the spine of the binding.
