FRANCE (Anatole). Ce que disent nos morts. Paris, Helleu, 1916. In-4, red half-maroquin, spine with five raised bands and gilt title, gilt head, marbled cover with title label preserved. First edition illustrated with drawings by Bernard NAUDIN and printed in a run of 4,000 copies; no. 53 of 450 on van Gelder Holland vellum, inscribed to Mrs Mona Delza (famous stage actress). It contains a letter from the antiquarian bookseller René Sergent, a comment by the owner of this copy on the author’s commitment, and letters from J.S. Marchand on the provenance of a letter from Anatole France (which had passed through the hands of Pierre Laval), an article from the 1925 newspaper *L’Éclair* on ‘booksellers who manufacture kepis’, and finally a four-page in-8 letter from Anatole France to the Minister of War, Painlevé, in 1915 requesting a postponement of the delivery of military kepis that had in fact been promised by the bookseller Bodo, of Tours…
