FRANCE (Anatole). *Le Stratagème*. A short story drawn from the unpublished memoirs of Sylvestre Bonnard. Paris, no publisher, 1880. In-8, garnet morocco, spine with five raised bands and ornate panels, gilt lace borders on the covers with spandrel decorations, gilt edges, interior binding, garnet moiré endpapers, in a box with flaps, covers preserved (Vermorel). A very rare first edition, printed in a run of only 25 numbered copies; no. 23 of the 17 on Holland paper. Illustrated with a fine portrait of Anatole France by Delteil, printed on Japanese paper, and here further enhanced by an additional portrait of the same subject by Ladislas Loewy. A very fine copy in an elegant binding, signed lightly at a later date. Provenance: Bibliothèque du Bourg de Bozas (cat. II, 1991, No. 334) with bookplate.
