Description
[Pelletan / Helleu Wedding]. Wedding announcement for René Helleu and Jeanne Pelletan. Paris, Édouard Pelletan, 1912.
Set of two slim in-12 booklets, each comprising 8 pages, bound with a white cord, without covers. First edition of the speeches delivered at the town hall of Paris’s 6th arrondissement by the mayor, Félix Herbet, and by Anatole France on the occasion of the wedding celebrated on 2 February 1912, between Jeanne, daughter of the great publisher Édouard Pelletan, and René Helleu, the company’s chief collaborator. Illustrated with a large allegorical engraving bearing the inscription ‘To live for others – Family, country, humanity’. The second booklet contains the two speeches, including that by Anatole France. A small insert within the wedding announcement, printed in red, states that, for health reasons, the ceremony took place in the privacy of the family. This refers to the health of Édouard Pelletan, who died on 31 May 1912.
These two booklets constitute a moving account of a joyous occasion which was followed in 1913, after Pelletan’s death, by René Helleu taking over the catalogue under the name Éditions d’art Édouard Pelletan, René Helleu, bookseller and publisher, still at 125 Boulevard Saint-Germain. He also opened a gallery named the Galerie Pelletan-Helleu, and it was not until the 1920s, after going into partnership with René Sergent, that he began publishing works under his own name, René Helleu.
