Description
GEETERE (Frans de) & LAUTRÉAMONT (Isidore DUCASSE, Count of). *Les Chants de Maldoror*. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and sixty-five etchings by Frans de Geetere. Paris, Blanchetière, 1927. 2 volumes, large quarto (31 x 28 cm), replaced covers in the publisher’s flap-and-lacing slipcases (one split spine). First illustrated edition. 66 original etchings by Frans de Geetere (one colour frontispiece and 39 in-text plates for the first volume; one black-and-white frontispiece and 25 in-text plates for the second volume). Printed in a run of 133 copies. No. XLVII of 30 on Montval laid paper, verified by the publisher, containing a suite of engravings with notes, six colour etchings, an original sketch in black ink (corresponding to the final, bloody colour engraving), an original copperplate (corresponding to the framing engraving on p. 63 of Volume I). Also included is an artist’s proof of the colour frontispiece, signed in pencil and printed in a different shade, and an original drawing by Frans de Geetere, signed and dated 1929 in pencil, depicting an embracing couple. A powerful illustration of *Les Chants de Maldoror*, of which this is the first illustrated edition (if one disregards José Roy’s frontispiece for the 1890 Genonceaux edition). A very fine volume.
