Description
HAMBURG (André) & MONTHERLANT (Henry de). *La Rose de Sable*. Paris, Henri Lefebvre, 1967.
2 vols., folio size, in folio format, printed and padded covers, slipcases and cases.
First edition. Written between 1930 and 1932 in Algiers, this novel, which criticises colonisation, was not published in its final version until 1967. Printed in a run of 224 copies; this is one of 24 artist’s copies, numbered on B.F.K. de Rives vellum.
The volume is illustrated with 30 original colour illustrations, both in the text and as end-papers (including 10 spread across two pages) by André Hambourg, wood-engraved by Pierre Bouchet, Jacques Hérouard and Guy Descouens, as well as 25 tailpieces, 29 initials, a half-title and title page engraved by Henri Renaud.
This copy is enhanced by TWO ORIGINAL full-page colour watercolours signed by Hambourg; the first bears a dedication to Fréderic Mégrét: “With all my old friendship… and our memories of North Africa!”
A young Surrealist in 1929, Mégrét was quickly ousted by Breton. He worked as a journalist in Oceania and Egypt, then as an art critic for *Le Figaro littéraire*.
The spine of the slipcase and the case are slightly faded and scuffed.
