In-4, black coarse-grained half-maroquin with a band, smooth spine, author’s name and title in gold lettering, gilt head, cover and spine preserved. 15 original colour woodcuts, frontispiece and end-paper engravings by M. L’Hoir. Printed in a run of 260 copies; no. 2 of the 5 first-edition copies on Imperial Japan paper, containing a four-part set of woodcuts (including one in the first state on China paper and two hand-coloured states), a rejected plate (here in two states), a handwritten page by the author (here missing), an original drawing by the artist (here with two fine ORIGINAL DRAWINGS) and enriched with an additional set of all the woodcuts in black, a proof on copper, a rejected proof for a chapter heading, and the prospectus and subscription form. A very fine copy.
