Description
CALLOT (Jacques). The Gypsies.
Complete set in the fourth state (+ a copy of the first plate), comprising a set of 5 engravings on vellum paper, mounted on a block, cut to size; a brown stain in the top right-hand quarter; the last plate is cut with a missing section at the top and on the right. ‘E.L.’ collector’s stamp on the reverse.
These subjects were inspired by the artist’s memories of his time amongst the Bohemians during his first trip to Italy. “It is claimed that these four subjects were engraved on a single plate in the form of a frieze, and that this plate was subsequently cut into four by the artist; but this tradition is not substantiated, and we have not encountered anyone who has seen proofs of this frieze. Nevertheless, this view is not entirely implausible […]” (Meaume 667–670.)
