NAPOLETANO (Teodoro Filippo di Liagno, known as Filippo). [Capricci e habiti militari.] [1622]. A rare set of 11 plates (out of 12) depicting soldiers and Moors in traditional Spanish costume, engraved by Gio. ORLANDI after Filippo Napoletano. Dimensions: 11.5 x 9.5 cm at the edge of the plate. Glued by the corners into a modern booklet (torn blank cover). Good condition and good impression on laid paper. The Italian painter Teodoro Filippo di Liagno, known as Filippo Napoletano or Filippo d’Angeli Romano (1589–1629), was best known for his landscapes and nocturnal scenes. Active in Naples, Rome and Florence, he worked for the Medici family and was influenced by the Flemish landscape painters. His highly eclectic body of work includes paintings, frescoes and etchings depicting landscapes, ancient ruins, animals and soldiers. Fascinated by scientific and exotic curiosities, he owned a remarkable cabinet of curiosities, reflecting his interest in nature, the strange and the encyclopaedic knowledge of his time. Attached is a set of six small ornamental etchings, unsigned and mounted on a separate loose sheet.
