Description
BÉRANGER (Pierre Jean de) [& GRANDVILLE]. The Complete Works of P.-J. Béranger, a new edition revised by the author. Paris, Perrotin, 1847. 2 vols., large 8vo, midnight blue half-maroquin with corner pieces, richly decorated ribbed spine, gilt fillet on the covers, gilt head (see Champs). The illustrations comprise two portraits, 52 entirely unpublished plates based on drawings by Charlet, Lemud, Johannot, Daubigny, Pauquet, Jacques, Lange, Penguilly, de Rudder & Raffet, and a fold-out facsimile. The *Chansons* led to Béranger being prosecuted by the public prosecutor’s office for offences against public decency, public and religious morality, insulting the person of the King, and incitement to display in public an unauthorised symbol of allegiance. He was the most frequently and best illustrated author, which clearly reflects the enthusiasm of his time (Vicaire I, 412–415). A few scattered foxing spots, but otherwise a very fine copy in a lovely signed half-binding, enriched with a series of 119 out-of-text engravings by GRANDVILLE. Ex-libris J.M.
