North Africa – KADDOUR & DRACK-OUB. Fables and Tales in Sabir. Algiers, Carbonel, n.d. [c. 1920]. 8vo, paperback, illustrated cover. 3rd edition, illustrated with full-colour plates by Drack-Oub. E.A.S. (?). A corruption of the Spanish word ‘saber’ (‘to know’), ‘Sabir’ referred to the mixture of French, Italian, Spanish and Arabic spoken in North Africa. A mixture of Romance languages and, to a lesser extent, Turkish, Arabic and Greek, spoken from the 16th to the 19th century in the Levantine ports, Sabir was also known as the ‘lingua franca’.
