A corruption of the Spanish word ‘saber’ (‘to know’), ‘Sabir’ referred to the mixture of French, Italian, Spanish and Arabic spoken in North Africa. A mixture of Romance languages and, to a lesser extent, Turkish, Arabic and Greek, spoken from the 16th to the 19th century in the Levantine ports, Sabir was also known as the ‘lingua franca’.
