CHARTON (Édouard). AROUND THE WORLD. A New Journal of Travels, edited by Mr Édouard Charton and illustrated by our most famous artists. Paris, L. Hachette & Co., 1860–1869. Ten years’ worth of issues bound in 20 quarto volumes in dark brown half-calf, smooth spine with gold fillet, title and volume number gilded (contemporary binding). Spines sun-faded. Foxing, rare faint marginal water stains, a tear without loss at the margin of one leaf, one loose quire. Good overall condition. The first run of this famous journal, founded and published by Édouard Charton, richly illustrated with thousands of engravings within the text and as full-page plates. It continued until 1914 and played a major role in popularising travel. This period was indeed one of major colonial and scientific expeditions, and many travel accounts were published here for the first time. The abundance of illustrations makes this rich magazine very accessible to the reader. Ex-libris JM.
