In-12 (13 x 8 cm), 71 pp. and 24 plates; the publisher’s green cardboard cover, the front cover illustration somewhat faded, handwritten title on the spine.
Published by Gide ‘for the amusement and instruction of young people’, this work on England is the first in a series of six that will include Austria, China, Russia, Switzerland and Turkey. It is illustrated with 24 engraved and coloured plates.
A collector of travel books, Jean-Baptiste Eyriès (1767–1846) was one of the founders of the Geographical Society. Blessed with a prodigious memory, he spoke nine languages. He published several geographical works and translated numerous accounts by travellers and explorers from English, German and the Scandinavian languages.
