Paris, Académie de coiffure, 1900. In-8, comprising 3 unnumbered folios, 57 plates, and 3 unnumbered folios. Bradel binding in ivory half-vellum with corner pieces, green and white fancy paper covers, black title label (modern binding). Scattered foxing. A collection of 57 historical women’s hairstyles created by the Académie de coiffure for an exhibition at the Palais du costume. Ex-libris: Castello di Duino. Fourth edition of this study of hairstyles from ancient Egypt to 1967, illustrated with numerous black-and-white reproductions within the text. A fine copy. - MILLER (Emmanuel), In Praise of Hair. Unpublished discourse by an anonymous Greek author, refuting Synesius’s discourse entitled In Praise of Baldness. Paris, Brockhaus and Avenarius, 1840. In-8, 2 unnumbered folios, 80 pp. Half-glossy blond calf, smooth spine with longitudinal decoration, author’s name and title in gold (contemporary binding). Spine slightly rubbed, trace of a label at the foot, scattered foxing. A catalogue entry devoted to an unpublished Greek manuscript mentioning Dion Chrysostom’s ‘Eulogy on Hair’. This study is dedicated to Jacob Geel, then chief librarian at the University of Leiden, who had recently demonstrated that the ‘Eulogy on Hair’, long considered lost, was in fact quoted in full in Synesius’s ‘Eulogy on Baldness’. The Hellenist Emmanuel Miller (c. 1812–1886) made his own contribution by discovering an anonymous Greek manuscript that challenges Synesius’s text — a sort of refutation of the refutation. The manuscript is reproduced here in full, accompanied by an analysis, notes and an index in Greek. It is only regrettable that the editor did not provide a French translation. A fine copy.
