[RAISSON (Horace)]. *Code de la toilette*, a comprehensive manual on elegance and hygiene, containing the laws, rules, practical applications and examples of the art of personal grooming and of dressing with taste and method. Paris, Roret, 1828. In-18 (13.5 x 8 cm), olive-coloured glazed half-calf with small corners, smooth decorated spine, gilt title, speckled edges (contemporary binding). First edition, illustrated with a copperplate-engraved frontispiece captioned ‘Départ pour le bal’ (Setting off for the ball). A friend of Balzac, Horace Napoléon Raisson (1798–1854) served at the Ministry of Finance before turning to journalism and literature. From the Kilian Fritsch collection, with his bookplate.
