Anonymous. *Le Courrier des Enfers* (*The Letter from Hell*). (The Shadow of M. Lamoignon in Hell.) *Au Tartare*, published by *Imprimerie de la Liberté*, and available in Paris from Momoro, Printer & Bookseller, 160 Rue de la Harpe, sd. In-8, 8 pp. Modern marbled cardboard binding with a reproduction of the title page on the front cover. A rare pamphlet directed against the Keeper of the Seals, Chrétien François II de Lamoignon (1735–1789), who became President of the High Court in 1758 and was exiled along with the Parliament in 1772. “At the time of the Assembly of Notables in 1787, he was appointed Keeper of the Seals to replace Hue de Miromesnil and made a Knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit. From then on, he proved himself consistently devoted to the court and worked in concert with the chief minister, Loménie de Brienne, on the edicts concerning the stamp duty and the territorial subsidy, which Parliament refused to register. The measures introduced by the two ministers met with the same resistance, and they were forced to resign. Lamoignon tendered his resignation in October 1788, three months after Loménie de Brienne. He retired to his estate at Bâville, where he died on 16 May 1789 following a hunting accident, the true cause of which remains unknown. His valuable library was sold after his death; the finest volumes found their way to England. He left behind three sons [...] The archbishop referred to here and Loménie de Brienne (1727–1794) were both vicars-general to the Archbishop of Rouen; the latter also amassed a valuable library. The ‘M. de Beauj.’ referred to here is Nicolas Beaujon (1718–1786), who was a banker to the Court and Receiver-General of Finances for the Rouen Generality, and who combined an already considerable fortune with great business acumen.”
