Description
CAUSSIDIÈRE (Marc). Memoirs of Caussidière, former Prefect of Police and Member of Parliament. Paris, Michel Lévy frères, 1849. 2 volumes, in-8, in olive half-shagreen, spine finely ribbed and decorated, title and volume number gilt, date at the foot, blind-stamped border, gilt head, covers and spine preserved (see Champs). Spine very slightly sun-faded. First Parisian edition following the original edition published in London the previous year, whilst the author, Marc Caussidière (1807–1861)—a leading figure in the revolutionary republicanism of 1848—was in exile. A former silk worker in Lyon and journalist, he took part in the uprisings of 1831 and 1834 before being appointed Prefect of Police in Paris during the February Revolution. Elected as a deputy to the Constituent Assembly, he was implicated in the events of 15 May 1848, forced into exile first in England and then in the United States, before returning to France under the amnesty of 1859. His Memoirs are devoted primarily to the Revolution of 1848 and his political activities. A very fine copy. Bookplate bearing the initials A. H. (A. Hénin, Parisian silversmith) with the inscription ‘J’ai Lu Manuel des Ouvriers’, engraved by E. Valton. Bookplate J.M.
