Description
COLLIN de PLANCY (Jacques, Albin, Simon). *Feudal Dictionary*, or *Research and Anecdotes on Tithes and Feudal Rights, Fiefs and Benefices, Privileges, Ridiculous Dues and Homages, Feudal Customs, the prerogatives of the nobility and the misery of the peasants, ecclesiastical and seigneurial justice, corvée labour, and serfdom; in short, on everything pertaining to the feudal system. Paris, Foulon et Cie, 1819.
2 volumes, in-8, in light-coloured half-calf, spine with faux raised bands, title and volume number labels in black calf (light later binding).
First edition of this work, which, in the form of alphabetical entries, offers a critique of the institutions of the Ancien Régime. It dates from Collin de Plancy’s anti-clerical period, prior to his conversion to Catholicism in 1837, after which he devoted himself in particular to works such as the *Dictionnaire infernal*, which has been regularly reprinted.
