This work by the writer Jean-Denis Magalon (1794–c. 1840), founder of the newspaper *L’Album* in 1822 in Paris, in which he fiercely attacked the Jesuits, an act which led to his conviction in a criminal court to 13 months’ imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 francs. Thanks to the intervention of Châteaubriand, then a minister, he was transferred to Sainte-Pélagie to serve out the remainder of his sentence after being tried alongside common criminals.
