Occident. 3 issues in-4, 50 pp.; 56 pp.; 56 pp. Paperback, with colour illustrated cover. 1947–1948. Three issues, including the first (Spring 1947, January 1948 and February–March 1948), of the intercontinental magazine, ‘the magazine of a civilisation’, which explores ‘the art of living your life as a modern man’. It is illustrated with numerous black-and-white and colour photographs and illustrations, both within and outside the text, by Cassandre, Dignimont, Steiner, Garreto, Woop, etc. Leading writers of the 20th century contributed actively to it, including Paul Éluard, André Malraux, Alberto Moravia, Paul Valéry, Louise de Vilmorin and Paul Émile Victor. Numerous advertisements are included for: Scandal, Chanel, Christofle, Air France… The first issue is accompanied by a small booklet entitled “Carnet d’élégance”, illustrated with black-and-white photographs by Pierre Boucher, which allows readers “to follow the evolution of fashion in Paris with precision”. The artistic direction was overseen by A. M. Cassandre, who designed one of the covers, drawing inspiration from a satanic scene.
