BOILEAU DESPRÉAUX (Nicolas). The Works of Nicolas Boileau Despréaux. With historical notes, provided by the author himself. A new edition, revised, corrected and expanded with various remarks. The Hague, Gosse & Neaulme, 1729. 2 vols. folio, marbled calfskin, ornately ribbed spine, title and volume number labels in red and tan marbling, gilt fillet framing the covers, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Caps and corners worn, scuffed and with some skin loss. A reissue of the 1718 edition with a few alterations. The illustrations comprise a fine frontispiece, a portrait of the Princess of Wales (here missing), 7 separate plates including 1 frontispiece title plate for ‘le lutrin’, two vignettes on the title pages, two headbands and 26 large end-piece illustrations, several of which are repeated; all by Bernard Picart, except for the portrait, which is engraved by V. Gunst after Kneller; as well as a large number of initials, most of which are woodcuts. A few small foxing spots. (Cohen 166.)
