Description
BOUVIER (Mgr). The Mysteries of the Confessional. Prologue. – A Handbook for Confessors. – Epilogue by the parish priest X***. Rome, Paris, London, Geneva, Amsterdam, Brussels, Madrid, Vienna, Berlin, Saint Petersburg, no publisher, no date. Quarto, 319–[1] pp. Green half-basane, smooth thread-bound spine, gilt title (contemporary binding). Some wear to the binding, minor nicks in the margins. A most curious work, with the prologue, commentaries and epilogue by the anti-clerical and libertarian publisher Maurice LACHÂTRE (1814–1900), and the translation of the Latin texts by Paulin FRANQUES and A.R. Engraved illustrations within the text. Bishop of Le Mans in the mid-19th century, Mgr Bouvier castigates, amongst other things, fornication, prostitution, incest, ‘clerics who incite shameful acts’, ‘various forms of unnatural lust’ – pollution, sodomy and bestiality –, ‘morose indulgence’, kissing, women’s finery, indecent speech and lewd glances, balls and spectacles. This translation is accompanied by a scathing anti-clerical and atheist pamphlet setting out the tenets of libertarian communism, which emerged in the 1880s. The text was placed on the Index on 19 January 1877. RARE. (Gay III, 313 for the 1880 edition by Meulenaere.)
