Description
[FERRAGUS (pseudonym of Louis ULBACH)]. La Cloche. [From issue no. 8 (3 October 1868) to issue no. 21 (2 January 1869)] 14 issues bound in two square in-12 volumes, in tan half-basane, with a smooth spine threaded in gold, featuring title and date labels (contemporary binding). Louis Ulbach contributed to the *Revue de Paris*, *Le Temps* and later *Le Figaro*, making a name for himself through his literary reviews and serialised novels. In 1868, he founded *La Cloche*, a weekly satirical pamphlet opposing the Second Empire, which became a daily in December 1869 before ceasing publication during the siege of Paris in 1870. His attacks on the regime led to several court cases, prison sentences and heavy fines, making *La Cloche* one of the leading opposition newspapers in the final years of the Empire. Having become a librarian at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal in 1878, he also chaired the International Literary and Artistic Association, working to defend literary property rights.
