Description
HEMSTERHUIS (François). Philosophical Works. Paris, H. J. Jansen, 1792. 2 vols., in-8, viii–310 pp., 323 pp. Bradel-bound in cloth with woven thread, orange title page on the spine. First edition, illustrated with three folding plates and attractive intaglio-engraved vignettes within the text (including title vignettes). Although its circulation remained limited, Hemsterhuis’s work exerted a major influence on his contemporaries: Diderot, who was acquainted with him, commented on it; Jacobi, whose ‘Letter to Hemsterhuis on Spinoza’ is included in this edition; Herder, Goethe, and later Hölderlin, Novalis and Schlegel. Alongside Jacobi’s letter, the volume also contains a translation of Herder’s ‘On Love and Selfishness’. A very fine copy, very well preserved, with a prestigious provenance: a red-inked ex-libris bearing a coat of arms from the library of King Ernest Augustus I of Hanover (1771–1851), son of George III of the United Kingdom.
