SURVILLE (Madame de). Unpublished Poems [...] published by Mrs de Roujoux and Ch. Nodier. Paris, Nepveu, 1827. In-8, red half-shagreen, decorated ribbed spine, gilt title (slightly later binding). Frontispiece and 4 engraved illustrations ‘in the Gothic style’, after drawings by Colin, a pupil of M. Girodet. Cut-out portrait added to the flyleaf. Foxing. Marguerite-Éléonore Clotilde de Vallon-Chalys, Dame de Surville (born c. 1405 in Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, died c. 1498) was a purported French poetess. Her poems, published only at the beginning of the 19th century (Poésies de Marguerite-Éléonore-Clotilde de Vallon-Chalys, formerly Madame de Surville, a 15th-century French poet, Paris, Henrichs, 1803) were met with enthusiasm before being revealed as a literary hoax perpetrated by Joseph de Surville.
