Erich von Stroheim (1885–1957), born in Vienna and having settled in the United States before dividing his career between Hollywood and France, was one of the most distinctive figures in twentieth-century cinema. A visionary director of silent films (Folies de femmes, Les Rapaces, Queen Kelly) and an unforgettable actor in Renoir’s La Grande Illusion and Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, he also devoted himself to writing in the final years of his life. *Les Feux de la Saint-Jean*, comprising the two volumes *Véronica* (1951) and *Constanzia* (1954), ranks among his major literary works and extends into the novel the dark, passionate and excessive world that characterises his cinematic oeuvre.
