PHOTIOS I of Constantinople. ΦΩΤΙΟΥ ΜΥΡΙΟΒΙΒΛΟΝ Η ΒΙΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΗ. Photii Myriobiblon sive Bibliotheca [...] Rouen, Berthelin, 1653. A substantial folio volume comprising [16] leaves, 1624–104 columns, [12] leaves. Brown half-calf, decorated ribbed spine, title page in red marbling (19th-century binding). Cut-out title vignette, missing, but complete with the very fine heraldic banner bearing the coat of arms of Nicolas TURGOT. Restoration to the half-title leaf. A few scattered foxing spots. An old handwritten bookplate on the title page (religious community). An engraved print, cut out (large ‘cul-de-lampe’) and pasted onto the flyleaf. The most sought-after edition of this important work, according to Brunet (IV, 624). JM bookplate. The ‘Bibliotheca’ or ‘Myriobiblos’ by Photios, Patriarch of Constantinople, is a compilation of 280 entries written around 855, summarising and analysing Greek works, mainly secular and Christian. Intended for his brother Tarasios prior to a diplomatic mission, the work combines summaries, critiques and extracts, in some cases preserving the memory of writings that are now lost. In it, Photius demonstrates his own personal and erudite literary judgement, and his work is regarded as a cornerstone of medieval literary history. Preserved in various manuscripts, the text was edited, translated and annotated from the 17th to the 20th century.
