Description
HAHN THE YOUNGER IN STUTTGART Regulator with Date — Integral Balance. Circa: 1820. Case: round, gilded metal, bezel and hinged back, inner bowl, key-wound. Dial: white enamel signed ‘Hahn le jeune à Stouttgardt’, regulator display: hour and minute sub-dial at 6 o’clock in Roman numerals, date sub-dial at 12 o’clock, central seconds scale around the periphery. Hands: blued steel, central seconds hand. Glass: domed mineral glass. Movement: mechanical, key-wound; gilded and engraved mainplate and bridges, signed ‘Hyman Samuel, London’; integral balance occupying almost the entire movement. Set: none. Diameter: 57 mm. Gross weight: ‘Hahn the Younger in Stouttgardt’, heir to the prestigious watchmaking dynasty founded by Philipp Matthäus Hahn, signs the dial as the maker of a high-quality English movement (Hyman Samuel, London). The combination of a regulator display with date function and a large integral balance wheel demonstrates a level of technical ambition rarely seen in a pocket watch of this era.
