Description
BARRADELLE WRITING NECESSARY (name of its inventor) in silver covered with black studded leather. The set includes a pen-holder, a nib, a dry-point compass, a "demy pied de roy" ruler and an inkwell. The folding ruler is decorated with high-quality flowers and foliage.
The main instruments are in silver with a fleur-de-lys hallmark (discharge for small silver objects for the city of Paris).
Given the date and quality of the instrument, it can be attributed to the workshop of Jacques Nicolas Baradelle (1700-1770).
Paris, circa 1750-1760.
Gross weight: 87 grams.
Height (total): 12.7 cm (One instrument missing, oxidation).
Note: Jacques Nicolas Baradelle (1700-1770), son of a watchmaker and godson of Cassini (director of the Paris Observatory). After training with J.Le Maire and N.Bion (two leading manufacturers of scientific instruments and globes), Baradelle was awarded the title of master foundryman in 1725.
He then established himself on the Quai de l'Horloge, "under the sign of the Observatory". Renowned for the finesse of his creations, he was responsible for various sundials, spheres, rings and armilles, and the invention of a writing set that bears his name. On his death, his son Jean Louis Jacques took over the business until 1790 and signed Baradelle Le Jeune.
