CHINA, late 19th and early 20th centuries. A set of approximately forty-eight pieces in blue-and-white porcelain known as ‘Hue’, from various services, marked ‘Noi Phu’ on the bases, some with stenciled decoration, comprising:
. Five bowls with lids, flared-sided, including two larger ones decorated with cranes;
. Four lidded tureens decorated with floral and honeycomb motifs (one lid missing; one stencilled);
. Two small bowls decorated with lotus motifs (one chipped);
. Three cups with handles, decorated with lake landscape motifs;
. Two lidded pots with handles, decorated with lake landscape motifs;
. Seven bowls decorated with lake landscape motifs (three cracked);
. Twenty small bowls of various designs and sizes, including six stencilled with peonies and six stencilled with phoenixes;
. One flat-bottomed bowl decorated with auspicious motifs (lacking its lid);
. One jug, decorated with a lakeside landscape;
. One small vase; six spoons, one of which is polychrome;
. Two large terrine lids, one of which is irregularly shaped.
Provenance: Passed down through the generations of a family of chemists from the Besançon region, who lived in Shanghai and then in Indochina between the 1920s and 1940s.
