CHINA, c. 1920. Set of six Canton porcelain pieces, comprising one round bowl and five square plates with cut corners, decorated with butterflies in ‘famille rose’ enamels; marked ‘China’ and ‘made in China’ on the reverse.
(Minor chipping on the rim of the bowl)
Dimensions of bowl: 9.3 x 21.3 cm – Diameter of plates: 18 cm
Provenance: Passed down through the generations of a family of chemists from the Besançon region, who lived in Shanghai and then in Indochina between the 1920s and 1940s.
Note: the ‘China’ and ‘Made in China’ marks first appeared in 1891 and 1919 respectively, to comply with US customs legislation.
