Description
CHINA, 20th century. Large print depicting Xuanzang (602–664), one of the great Buddhist monks of the Tang dynasty, returning from India, where he travelled between 629 and 645, bearing Buddhist sutras which he set about translating upon his return, thereby contributing to the rise of Buddhism in China.
The inscription is by Ouyang Jian (1871–1943), a lay monk, calligrapher, scholar and reformer of Buddhism in 20th-century China. (Framed under glass)
