Description
JAPAN, late 17th and 18th centuries. Two lacquered inrô: one with four compartments, originally in gold lacquer and nashiji, decorated with chrysanthemums and paulownia; wear has revealed the red and black backgrounds; the other with a single compartment in black lacquer and mother-of-pearl and lead inlays, depicting the moon rabbit running towards a crescent moon above the waves; formerly in the Tony Smet collection (sold in 1953), with an extract from a catalogue in which it is described as an ‘inniku bako’, a seal paste box.
