- Charles VERBRUGGHE (1877–1974) ‘Forest in Autumn’ Oil on hardboard Signed lower right and countersigned upside down with his left hand. 22 x 27 cm Charles VERBRUGGHE (1877–1974) Born in Bruges on 15 June 1877, Charles Vanbrugghe was a completely self-taught painter. He was destined for a career as a cobbler, but in the mornings he would slip away to sketch the surroundings of Bruges, which remained his favourite subject. Around 1906, he moved to Paris, to Montmartre. There he met the great artists of the time: Renoir and Degas. He worked with Utrillo and Van Dongen and took part in gatherings at the Lapin Agile. He thus became part of the Impressionist movement, which he would never leave and to which he remained faithful throughout his career. He spent two months a year in Bruges creating his renowned landscapes, for it is in landscape painting that his technical excellence is most evident. Despite his success, he remained close to people and stayed humble. This is how this collection has come down to us: a collector friend had the privilege of hosting him and his family, and thus acquired many of his works, through a blend of friendship and patronage. This collection showcases his favourite themes, above all landscapes, and as he was fond of saying: “One must tackle Nature Nature, quite simply.”
