David JOHNSTON and Jules VIEILLARD’s factory in Bordeaux (c. 1835–1845): Set of 7 earthenware plates with grisaille enamelled decoration depicting scenes from the life of Jesus; the rim is decorated with lambrequins. Manufacturer’s mark on the underside. Diameter: 19.5 cm. Chips and wear. [In 1834, David Johnston, a Bordeaux merchant of Irish descent and mayor of Bordeaux from 1838 to 1842, decided to acquire the former mills at Teynac (or the Chartrons mills, Quai de Bacalan), with a view to converting the disused buildings into a factory producing fine earthenware and porcelain, which remained in operation until 1895, the year of the death of Jules Vieillard’s youngest son.
