BARLA, Jean-Baptiste. Iconography of Orchids. An Illustrated Flora of Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes. Nice, Imprimerie Caisson et Mignon, 1868. 1 vol., large quarto. [4]ff, 83pp, [1]f, 63pl. Contemporary green half-percale binding, title and author’s name in gold lettering. The volume is illustrated with 63 lithographed and coloured plates by Vincent Fossat. A major milestone in orchidology: this is the very first monograph in the French language devoted to orchids. This copy is enhanced by an autograph dedication by the author on the half-title page. (The name has been scratched out). Barla went on to become director of the Natural History Museum in Nice. Although mycology was his main focus, he nevertheless undertook the compilation of this flora devoted to the wild orchids of the Alpes-Maritimes. He enlisted the services of Vincent Fossat (1823–1893), his regular illustrator, who produced exceptional watercolours of meticulous accuracy. Scuffing to the corners and edges.
